Recent reports put Vietnam among the better Asia-Pacific performers in the ICT industry.

Vietnam is ranked among the Top 10 most attractive software outsourcing countries in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of offshore services, according to a 2014 report .

Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are still among the world's top 20 and 30 outsourcing destinations, respectively. The rankings were announced at a conference releasing “Vietnam’s 2014 White Book on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)”, held by the Ministry of Information and Communications on October 27.

Total ICT revenue reached $39.53 billion in 2013, according to the report, an increase of 55 per cent against 2012. Export turnover in the hardware sector contributed significantly to this growth. This was the third consecutive year Vietnam’s IT industry earned a trade surplus, with the contribution of mobile phones to export turnover representing 60 per cent. Figures show that export turnover in the hardware sector increased from $3.37 billion in 2009 to $34.76 billion in 2013, a ten-fold rise over the last five years. Revenue from the software sector was $1.36 billion in 2013, an increase of 13 per cent against 2012, while revenue from the digital content sector was $1.4 billion, 14 per cent higher than in the previous year.

According to rankings in the Measuring of Information Society report regarding the ICT Development Index, by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Vietnam fell two places from 86/155 in 2012 to 88/157 in 2013, ranked fourth in Southeast Asia, and 14/28 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Vietnam was highly rated by the ITU in terms of IT applications, with a ranking of 83/155.

Rankings released in the Global IT Report by the World Economic Forum had Vietnam’s Networked Readiness Index (NRI) at a similar level to 2012, at 84/148, while the readiness sub-index of the Vietnamese Government was ranked 58/148. Telecommunications and internet costs were nearly the lowest in the world, ranking 8th among 148 countries.
